National Middle School Association

The National Middle School Association (NMSA) is the voice for professionals and others interested in the education and well-being of young adolescents. Established in 1973, the association has grown rapidly and has members in all 50 states, the Canadian provinces, and 42 other nations. In addition, 57 state, regional, and provincial middle school associations are official affiliates of NMSA.

NMSA is the only association dedicated exclusively to the education, development and growth of young adolescents. Membership is open to all. Although middle level teachers and administrators comprise the bulk of the membership, central office personnel, college and university faculty, state department officials, other professionals, parents and lay citizens are members and actively support the mission to improve the educational experiences of 10- to 15-year-olds. This open and diverse membership is a particular strength of NMSA.

The Association publishes Middle School Journal, the movement’s premier professional journal; Middle Ground, the magazine of middle level education; and Target, the association’s newsletter. In addition, NMSA publishes The Family Connection, a newsletter for families; Classroom Connections, a practical quarterly resource; Research in Middle Level Education Online; and research summaries.

The Association is also a leading publisher of professional books and monographs in the field of middle level education. Titles provide resources both for understanding and advancing various aspects of the middle school concept and for assisting classroom teachers in planning for instruction. More than 100 publications are available through the resource catalog along with selected titles published by other organizations.

NMSA’s highly acclaimed annual conference, which has drawn approximately 10,000 registrants in recent years, is held in the fall. The Association also sponsors an annual urban education conference, a Middle Level Leadership Institute, a Middle Level Higher Education Symposium for Teacher Preparation and other professional development initiatives.
